Guyana's National Youth Policy to be finalized before year end

GUYANA’S National Youth Policy is expected to be finalized before the end of this year. This was disclosed by Director of Youth in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Mr. Carl Brandon, during an interview with this newspaper. According to Mr. Brandon, the Youth Ministry found it fit to have the policy upgraded, given that the youths of today are somewhat different as opposed to a few years back.
He added that it was recognized that, despite steady progress, the upgrade should be ushering in a new generation of changes so that Guyana can be competitive in the 21st century.

The ministry has since sought the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in efforts to provide youths with the necessary opportunities and tools needed to further develop themselves, and to aid in national development.

He stated that young people are the primary beneficiaries of the national budget, and this is reflected in the allocations to the various sectors.

He pointed out that the government is focused on dealing with issues affecting youths in all the various sectors, including health, education, and parenthood, among others.

The substantial investments in education, health and other social services are to ensure that we have a highly educated and healthy population to drive development, narrowing the gaps that exist between Guyana and other countries.

Government is currently engaged in the process of securing the services of an international consultant who would help to finalise the policy so that it can come to fruition later in the year.
